Moving Portraits, Self Initiated

How do people express themselves when they are surprised? As part-time scientists full-time adventurers we wanted to work this out the simplest way we knew possible: observing them in slow motion! We created a slow-motion portraiture machine to capture the emotions of surprise and joy. And we had a blast doing it (literally!).

Our machine first involved surprising people with a burst of compressed air and colourful confetti cannon, bouncy-balls and glitter before letting them in on the excitement and allowing them to manipulate the process themselves. In so doing we captured several different emotions and created exciting moving portraits which our subjects could take home and share.
